Mukoka Family Update

Updated Tuesday May 13, 2008

Our African refugee family, Denis Mukoka and his children, are doing well, but continue to need our support.

Denis is working full time as a janitor for Wake County Public Schools and has just increased his second-job hours at Lowes Home Improvement from 10 to 30 hours per week. His eldest daughter, Rosette, continues to work full time at The Umstead Hotel restaurant and his four other children are full-time students at Panther Creek High School. Considering the language barrier, they are doing very well.

C4 made and met a one-year commitment to support them with monthly contributions for food, fuel, and utilities. In addition, there were some one-time contributions that went toward past credit card debt. Between Denis' hard work, our support, and a VERY frugal lifestyle, the family has been able to keep their financial heads above water.

Our financial support ended in April, so things are going to get very tight at the Mukoka household. That is why Denis has increased his time at his second job. However, working 70 hours a week and taking care of 5 children is very demanding and it could be telling on his health. All of his children are looking for summer jobs as well as any after-school employment they can get.

So, here are some ways you can help:

  • Employ any of the children on a one-time or part-time basis.
  • Find a better second job for Denis.
  • Make a one-time contribution to the Mukokas through Steve Hanson, Treasurer.
  • Tutor the children in their schoolwork – mainly English and Algebra.
  • Help on an as-needed basis to get the kids to doctor’s appointments and other commitments.

Denis has not taken our help for granted and often tells many us how much he appreciates it. I know for Helen and I it is difficult to give help if we are not sure it is really needed and/or appreciated. We know the Mukoka family is a worthy cause.

The following people deserve special recognition for their support:
Ron and Mary Jane have been the first line of defense for many unexpected needs including getting the kids to doctor’s appointments, coordinating with the ESL teacher, straightening out insurance issues, etc.

Steve Hanson has coordinated the payments to the family, tracked Denis finances, and acted as a financial counselor.

Thank you to all who have helped. Let’s all continue to support this most deserving family.
